Cops and Courts ReporterPosted date: 2009-Nov-19
Location: Espanola, New Mexico
The Rio Grande SUN, a 11,500 paid circulation weekly in Northern New Mexico is seeking a strong news writer with investigative tenacity to fill a cops and courts position. The successful candidate must share our news philosophy of going after news stories relentlessly and telling the whole story. The right person will cover city, county and state police in our readership area and follow cases through trial phase. We need someone who understands open records pursuits, can work law enforcement sources and organize coverage of the various cop shops and courts. The right candidate must have top-notch organizational skills, be able to cover police and courts as institutions and understand and report on how politics affect how cases and investigations are handled. The next reporter will also be covering elections for sheriff and magistrate and district court judge. Not for the light of heart but great job for someone who wants to create a good portfolio and be an old-style newspaper reporter. We just swept the investigative reporting category at the New Mexico Press Association awards and both packages were judged higher than any submission by the big dailies. We were not able to fill this position during our first go around, so we are offering up the job again. Currently we have an aggressive news staff and are only looking to fill this one upcoming vacancy. Current staff members have been here from everywhere from three months to eight years and came from all over the United States. Supportive management if you like the style of newspapering we do. The salary starts at $24,000 annually with an opportunity to earn $30,000 annually a year from being hired. Good benefits package and working environment, but we do not pay for moving expenses.
